1/7/2024 0 Comments Robert schwartz paDuring his career at JLC, he represented dependent and delinquent children in Pennsylvania juvenile and appellate courts, brought class-action litigation over institutional conditions and probation functions, testified in Congress before House and Senate committees, and spoke in more than thirty states on matters related to children and the law. During his Fellowship, Bob also wrote a monograph entitled Youth on Probation: Bringing a 20th Century Service into a Developmentally Friendly 21st Century World, in which he outlines a framework and identifies a set of guiding principles for juvenile probation reform.īob co-founded Juvenile Law Center (JLC) in 1975 and served as its Executive Director from 1982 to 2015. Schwartz and his wife, Caroline, have been living in Naples, Florida since his retirement. He has also been involved in charitable activities including the Boy Scouts of America, United Way, the Phoenix House and The Christophers. In 1994 he was the recipient of the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans. He was also a member of the Smeal College’s Board of Visitors at Penn State. Schwartz was the recipient of Penn State University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Alumni Achievement Award from New York University Graduate School of Business. Other affiliations included the Urban Land Institute, The Pennsylvania Society and The President’s Export Council under President Reagan. He received his MBA degree from New York University, attending night classes while working at Metlife. In 1953 he returned to Metlife and began a lifelong career with the company, advancing to Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Office. He then joined Metlife Insurance Company and a year later was given time off to serve with the Army during the Korean conflict. They moved to the United States when Robert was 18 months old and settled in the Philadelphia area and then in Bucks County, PA where he attended local schools.įollowing graduation from Doylestown High School, he entered Penn State University, graduating in 1949.
